Beverly Ulrich is a kinesiologist whose research specialty is motor development (development of motor control, delayed motor development in infants with Down syndrome and mylomeningocele, dynamic systems theory, modeling of gait patterns). Specifically, she studies the causes of change over time in patterns of movement with the focus on both basic and applied research issues. On the theoretical side, she has been studying the fit between dynamic systems theory and the acquisition of motor skills. On the applied side, she has been using the information gained from the theoretical research and working with infants with Down syndrome, attempting to help them reduce the delay they normally experience in learning to walk.
Currently she is focusing on two projects. In the first, she is using mathematical modeling to examine the use of dynamic resources in the movement solutions selected by persons with Down syndrome (new walkers, preadolescents, and elderly) during gait. In the second, she is studying the emergence of stepping and walking patterns in infants born with spina bifida.
